Mustard Herbal Soak Recipe

You may be questioning me right now… Mustard? In my bath? But I promise, it’s good. Here in the States I think many of us are accustomed to immediately thinking of a bright yellow paste that you would put on a hotdog. But that isn’t what we are adding to our herbal bath soak, thankfully. That would be… strange. Instead let’s take a step back. We are adding ground mustard seed powder, and a couple other ingredients to our bath.

I have been chatting all things cold & flu on my instagram in the last week because my family has been going through it! So I have been sharing all of the herbs, oils, and other natural remedies that we are using to support our recovery on top of doctors orders. I have been taking a routine Mustard herbal bath almost every day this week to help my body.

Mustard has a long history and is used all over the world especially in Ayurvedic, Greek and folk traditions. It is a spice that has a wonderfully warm and stimulating energy to it that can help promote circulation and in the case of a viral illness, help to vent that fever! Some of its other accolades are that it is antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, as well as an expectorant. Have a bit of insomnia? An herbal foot bath may be just what you need. All the more reason to have this recipe on hand. There are many ways to use mustard, but let’s start here, with a wonderfully beneficial bath.

Don’t have a tub? That is okay! Consider an herbal foot bath. It can be just as beneficial. It can clear up head congestion, and if used soon enough it can help lower fever*. You can also find that recipe below.

This is so easy, and frankly, cost effective to make yourself! I have links for all of the ingredients below! If you’re not the DIY type, please reach out to me info@coppermoonwellness.com. I can make. a custom order for you.

Mustard Herbal Soak Ingredients

1/3 cup of organic mustard seed
1 cup of Epsom Salt
1/2 cup finely ground Himalayan Sea Salt
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 Tbs Organic Ginger Root
1 Tsp Cinnamon Powder
15 Drops of Tea Tree essential oil (Optional)
10 Drops of Siberian Fir essential oil (Optional)
5 Drops of Frankincense essential oil (Optional)

Instructions

Combine all of your ingredients and mix well. Then store in an airtight container. I simply use a mason jar.

When you’re ready, add a 1/2 cup to a muslin bag, or simply straight in to the tub, though you may have some cleaning to do if you do that.

Soak for at least 15minutes and then get some rest! You’re on your way to feeling better.

Notes: This recipe will make enough for 4-6 baths and should last for about 6 months if stored in an airtight container. If you have sensitive skin, consider using less mustard powder in your recipe, and fewer essential oils. This recipe is not intended for children under 10 years old and was adapted from the Mountain Rose Herb Blog.

Mustard Herbal Foot Bath Recipe

Simply place 1/4 cup of organic mustard seed in a small cloth bag and then add to your water. Soak your feet for at least 5min or until water cools.

Notes: You can also add essential oils to the powder before you put it in the bag. Just mix well and use a smaller ratio. So perhaps: 3 drops Tea Tree, 2 drops Siberian Fir and 1 drop Frankincense. Just be sure to add them to the powder first and not drop them directly in to the water as we don’t want to irritate the skin.
